Make Bristol Harbour a safe,
clean place to swim

#SwimBristolHarbour is a campaign by passionate locals, to present a safe, accessible open water swimming venue for the people of Bristol.

We have an incredible body of water in the middle of our city. We want to start the conversation about this becoming an accessible amenity for the people of Bristol to use for physical health, mental health and to increase social capital.

Participants in harbour swimming must:

The benefits of wild swimming

Wild swimming has been increasing in popularity for years, but since lockdown it has exploded in popularity. Swimmers enjoy the opportunity to connect with nature, with others and to feel better.

It is a great physical exercise and has significant impact on mental health. It allows people to meet friends and appreciate their local environment.

Although Bristol is a city built by the water, there are limited city swim spots that are accessible for everyone. A designated bathing area in the harbour could benefit the local community and become a visitor attraction.

Swimming is only permitted during alloted hours at the Cottage Inn

 What is happening?

Swimming in the harbour is against the law, on the basis of water quality, the number of boats in the harbour and the risks of cold-water shock and drowning. With the right education and culture, a designated bathing area would create a safer, cleaner space for swimming.

Bristol County Council regularly tests for e-coli at four locations on the harbour, and monthly tests at another five spots, including the designated swimming area. The water quality of the Floating Harbour is now so good that often it’s registered at the ‘excellent’ standard for bathing waters, although there is much more to be done to reduce the levels of pollution and health risks. With developments planned around Bristol Harbour, we are urging local authorities and developers to join us in making this a reality.

As of May 2023, swimming has been permitted during allocated times- Saturday and Sunday between 8am and 10am.
